Japan’s Worst Tunnel Legend Begins at a Sealed Entrance
It was my last night in Fukuoka.
I had planned to go straight to the airport.
During dinner, a client asked me a question.
“You know Inunaki, right? If you like haunted places.”
I knew the name.
Inunaki Tunnel.
Anyone who has watched enough Japanese ghost videos has probably heard of it. Videos are still uploaded about the place. Old forum screenshots still circulate. Some people say they heard laughter in the tunnel. Some say a pale shape appeared only after zooming into a photo. Others say they saw nothing through the windshield, but someone appeared in the rearview mirror.
Most of the stories point toward the old tunnel.
There is the newer Inunaki Tunnel, where cars still pass through.
Then there is the old Inunaki Tunnel, now sealed off.
The newer road is still part of daily traffic. The old road is not. Miyawaka City states that the old road leading to the Old Inunaki Tunnel is closed, the entrances are gated, and entering the area is prohibited because of safety risks such as road collapse and falling rocks.
But most of the ghost stories go toward the blocked side.
The place people cannot enter.
The part people keep talking about.
