They Said Not to Follow the Student Waving Under the Field Stands
Our school field has a low set of stands.
It is not tall like the stands at a real stadium. It is more like a long row of concrete steps attached to one side of the field. During the day, students sit there with drinks from the school store, or come over to wipe sweat after playing soccer. Some students tap the sand off their shoes at the edge of the steps.
During the day, it is nothing special.
But after sunset, it feels a little different.
Even when the field lights are on, the space under the stands stays dark. There is a small metal door under the steps, and people say the school keeps event supplies or cleaning tools inside. It is usually locked, and almost no one has ever seen it open.
This story begins in front of that metal door.
In the literature club notebook, it was written like this:
“Under the field stands. Student waving. Do not follow.”
Under that, in smaller handwriting, there was one more line.
“Not there when seen from the other side.”
At first, I did not understand what it meant.
Did it mean someone was standing under the stands, but disappeared when seen from the opposite side? Or did it mean the waving student could only be seen from one direction? There was no explanatio
