I think it was sometime around 2010.
Back then, I was spending entire days jumping between job sites trying to find work.
I constantly refreshed pages like Saramin, JobKorea, and part-time job boards while sending out resumes everywhere.
This was before recommendation algorithms became so aggressive, so it was normal to end up wandering into strange small websites or obscure hiring boards you’d never heard of before.
I probably found the posting on one of those sites.
I still remember the title.
“Participants Wanted for Pain Endurance Clinical Trial”
At first I assumed it was bait.
But strangely, it didn’t feel like a joke post.
The writing was too normal.
The recruitment details were organized like any ordinary hiring notice, and there was even a regular-looking Apply button at the bottom.
From what I remember, the conditions were roughly like this:
Male applicants over 25
Must be available for long-term residency
Participation in phased pain experiments
High financial compensation
I don’t remember the exact amount.
But even by the standards of that time, it felt absurdly high, which somehow made it even more unsettling.
